Go ahead and use these listening skills on any A/B test of drums in Software vs Hardware compression: if you can't tell a difference, I don't know what else to tell you, because it's clearly there. Listen to both of the samples: hear how in one of them, the kick drum has a super definitive "spank" or "smack" sound? It also sort or sounds like it's sucking out all of the air around the smack, if that makes any sense. Slate FG-Q Mastering Equaliser and Controller: Late Fall 2010. Slate Upcoming Mystery Plugin 2: August 15th. Slate Upcoming Mystery Plugin 1: August 1st. Slate Virtual Console Collection Release Date: July 1st. Then, listen to either test A or test B, and listen to the kick drum specifically. This was posted on gearslutz: Slate FG-X Release Date: June 3rd. First, use monitors or headphones that you are VERY comfortable with. If you like working entirely in the box, that's totally fine, however if you think all of the big name studios out there still use analog hardware for no reason at all, you're naive.Įdit: I'm getting downvoted, so let me explain exactly what I hear, so that you don't think I'm talking out of my ass about generalities and so that all of you can hear the exact same differences as myself. I listened to the audio files, and I could hear a subtle difference: it's hard to say exactly what it is, but software compressors never seem to achieve the same amount of "spank" as hardware. I own an analog 1176 and a bunch of 1176 plugins. For a lot of material it is more of a courtesy or quaint tradition than any kind of necessity.I know I'm going to sound like an asshole for this, but I don't care. The audible difference between dither is so minuscule compared to how you mix a song, that it is for the most part irrelevant. You don't need dithering if you're in the box, because you can dither on your final render using the DAW's dither options. The winner again: L2 is very simple, one more reason it is superior ! -)

Limiter 6 has too many knobs, just way too many features, especially the very last plugin in master chain should be kept One reason why L2 still is or "seems" to be superior !

I like the dither noise of L2, no one is able to dither like L2, just because of the fact most plugins do not even offer dithering haha L2 is something like the king of plugins, sorry, it "seems" to be like the king (hard- and-or software)! ? Have seen people having L2 on every buss! Many a man still uses L2 for sure, I do not -) so everything is fine I guess.įor most people "is" and "seems" is just the same -> loudness war ! between IS and SEEMS TO is a big difference.īut its your choice. correct is: louder SEEMS TO sound better. and most "pros" dont use L2.Īnd the L2 doesnt make it sound better, it makes it louder. I say I dont use Waves plugins and I dont. if you do like the sound of the L2, go for it.Īnd for most of the things you said you are wrong. It´s the best dithering noise you can get!Īnd If there will be three more posts here claiming L2 is not the best Maximizer, I will give the purchase of L2 a serious consideration!Ī lot of very wild guesses.

Got it !? I use a free one called "forgotthename" or Kazrog, but no plugin has dithering like L2! Most people who make their living with Music production uses L1/2/3, that´s what most people think, that´s why most people say they do not use L2, even though they do use it. There are some activities, like unblocking toilets or telling the children the cat has died, that. The idea that loud digital masters can retain real dynamics seems like a contradiction in terms, but it's exactly what Slate Digital are claiming for their new mastering plugin.

If I did not have to clear each and every Waves file and re-scan each time I want to demo or install a Waves plugin, I would buy L2 and I am pretty sure that most prof mixes were maximized with L2 (Iwould not say 99%, but about 98,89% but nowadays it´s just cool to say "I do not use Waves" because everyone seems to use Waves in the business, so I say I do not use L2, and I am not just saying and covertly using it haha Slate Digital FG-X Virtual Mastering Pro review at Sound On Sound. L1 and L2 are one of the main reasons Waves is so popular!!! Since louder is perceived as better, L2 makes your mix better !
